BENSON COUNTY, N.D. — The former chief sheriff's deputy in Benson County will face three separate trials. Travis Carlson was originally charged with 14 counts of various forms of police misconduct. This week, the special prosecutor assigned to the case dismissed three of the four felonies, saying he could no longer prove the case. The only remaining felony is for tampering with a public record, related to Carlson's handling of a burglary at the Warwick Public School. Carlson will now go to trial on that charge Nov. 30. The remaining five misdemeanors will be handled at two separate trials, which have not yet been scheduled. "Discussions about the remaining counts, I will say, the specific legal fact pattern that is the problem is with counts one through five is not applicable to the remaining counts," said Oliver Bromke, special prosecutor. ]]>
